Cloth Diaper Prepping

Prepping your cloth diaper is necessary for all new diapers.  The process of prepping varies depending on the fabric that your cloth diapers are made of. Below is a good guide to prepping your cloth diapers.

Cloth Diaper PreppingBoiling *Only for 100% Cotton*:  Flats and prefolds as well as diapers without any synthetic material can be prepped by boiling them in pot of boiling water for 15 minutes.  This will strip of any natural oils and residues left behind during manufacturing.  Wash the cloth diapers as normal (one cycle) after they are done boiling.  Again, if there's PUL fabric or ANY synthetic material such as the All-In-One diapers, DO NOT boil them as you'll destroy the synthetic material due to high heat.

100% Cotton: Cotton needs to be washed and dried at least 3 or 4 times before you can use it. Some cottons like organic cotton may need to be washed and dried 8 times to become fully absorbent. A prefold and flat diaper can be washed and dried as little as 3 times before use. Bleached cottons can be used after one or two washes since their natural oils have been bleached out already. An AIO organic cotton diaper will need to be washed and dried 8 times.

100% Hemp & Bamboo: Hemp and bamboo will need to be washed and dried 7 or 8 times before it is fully absorbent.  It is suggested that bamboo fabric should not be boiled for prepping to retain its fabric structure.

Synthetic:  Synthetic fibers like fleece, microfiber, suede cloth and micro fleece only need to be washed and dried once. Your synthetic fiber diapers will last longer if you line dry them.  Often times high heat with electric dryer may cause the PUL/TPU to delaminate over time.
